This is a tale of hope and healing, featuring a 51-year-old patient from Kharagpur who found himself in a difficult situation but emerged triumphant with the assistance of Dr. Subhendu Sarkar, Head of Cardiac Anaesthesiology at Desun Hospital.

Back in 2009, this patient underwent heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. However, as time passed, he began experiencing breathing difficulties due to a stuck valve leaflet. Adding to his troubles, he was contending with high blood pressure, diabetes, and multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that weakened his immune system.

Addressing all these challenges required a collaborative effort. Doctors from various departments, including Cardiology, Neurology and Oncology, worked closely together. Once they received approval from the oncology team and diligently managed the patient’s diabetes and infections, they proceeded with the major heart surgery.

However, the post-operative period presented formidable challenges. The patient fell critically ill with an infection and slipped into a coma for a day. Upon awakening, he discovered he couldn’t move the left side of his body due to a stroke. To compound matters, a scan revealed insufficient blood flow to part of his brain, resulting in bleeding.

Undeterred, Dr. Sarkar and his team sprang into action. They administered potent medications to combat the infection, provided additional blood to aid in recovery, and closely monitored his cardiac status. Gradually, the infection began to recede by the third day. By the sixth day, the patient no longer required mechanical ventilation. And by the eighth day, he commenced specialized exercises to regain movement in his left side.

Remarkably, by the ninth day following surgery, the patient no longer required cardiac assistance or supplemental oxygen. Despite battling cancer, there was no exacerbation of his condition amidst the chaos.

“This story underscores the resilience of our patients and the unwavering dedication of our medical team,” remarked Dr. Subhendu Sarkar. “It serves as a reminder of the extraordinary achievements possible through collaboration and perseverance.”

As the patient continues to progress, his journey offers hope to others confronting health challenges.
